Pride Cherry Bock – Pacific Western Brewing (Prince George, BC, Canada)

  • My Rating: [C-]

Pride Cherry Bock – Pacific Western Brewing, 7% ABV, 750ml, (Prince George, BC, Canada) (*local BC craft beer)

  • Style: (flavoured – Cherry) Bock
  • Taste: Artificial maraschino cherry barley malt forward cloying medicinal
  • Where I got it : Libations Liquor / Vancouver
  • How much: $9.85 CAD (after 5% off) – 750ml., February 2016
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
  • Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: you wouldn’t love it

Visual: Bailer-top resealable bottle. Pours clear deep orange with an insignificant head, thin layer of retention, soda-like CO2 activity.

Nose: artificial maraschino cherry sweet, background sweet malt. (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: half-crisp, incoming sweet heavy malt

Mid-palate: jarred maraschino cherry juice, toffee heavy liquid barley malt, (lvl-7-sweetness)

Finish: medicinal cherry, cloying lingering bock maltiness

Summary: Very malt forward with artificial-tasting cherry. Flavours aren’t that agreeable – It’s like cough syrup and a heavy barley beverage. Pass.

Cariboo Honey Lager – Pacific Western Brewing, 5.5% ABV, 355ml., (Prince George, BC, Canada)

from the Cariboo.com website:

“Hey you like beer? Our Cariboo Honey Lager is A beer. The beer itself is made with the same hops and malt as our classic recipe, but we add real BC honey from the Cariboo region. Brewed for everyone who likes a drinkable beer in any form – from craft maniacs to the everyday Joe drinking on the job – we got the Honey Boo to make Winnie The Pooh say Woopty Woo.

Tasting Notes

Just a hint of honey gives this beer nice body and it will leave you tracing your glass with your finger craving more. We crafted a lager with just a hint of sweetness not an overbearing honey flavor. Paired it with all foods especially when you have the munchies because this honey doesn’t interrupt Game Time when it’s Go Time.”

  • Style: (Honey) Flavoured Lager
  • Taste: Crisp honey sweet malt barley
  • Where I got it : BC Liquor Stores
  • How much: $8/6pack – 6x355ml., October 2014
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
  • Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: no, too boring

Visual: Pours clear copper brown with barely any head, a super thin layer of retention, not that many sluggish streams.

Nose: light molasses malt, a touch of fishiness. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: crisp, honey

Mid-palate: (lvl-5)-sweetness, fizzy mouthfeel, (MAIN) honey, malt, barley,

Finish: light yeasty, no-length, almost non-existent hops, crisp honey-sweet malt finish.

Summary: Pretty basic and drinkable, with a definite honeyed profile. Not that exciting in terms of texture, flavour or depth.
