Visual: (cellared for 1.5 years). Unfiltered. Pours translucent golden orange with a large dissipating bubbly head, very active soda-like fast streams, a thin layer of retention, large suspended bits of sediment.

Nose: yeasty grain barley malt, pineapple-pear overtones. (lvl-5)-pungency.

Attack: bubbly full-crisp

Mid-palate: yeasty-resiny, coriander, grainy-pineapple barley malt, slowly compounding (lvl-6)-sweetness, light tangy-zingy, alcohol detection

Finish: slight dry apple-pear exhale, residual barley maltish

Summary: An all-around balanced Belgian strong ale with enough body, mouthfeel, and nuanced complexity. I didn’t find any trait particularly noteworthy. Good, but not exceptional.

  • What made an impression: engaging banana-tropical fruit

Visual: (cellared for 2 years). Pours translucent golden orange without much of a head, ring with large island retention, a bit of lacing, scatter singular micro streams.

Nose: banana, liquid pils malt. (lvl-5)-pungency.

Attack: crisp, tingly

Mid-palate: banana wheat malt, (lvl-3-sweetness), off-dry grainy malt, hints of mango

Finish: banana wheat malt exhale, subtle short bitterness, mild palate rough

Summary: Quite a tropical fruity base with a solid grainy malt to back it up. Overall it drank very easy with a bit of minor palate roughness at the finish.

Visual: Bottled on 2017.05.02. Pours cloudy pale straw yellow with a massive dissipating head, bubbly retention, super-fast soda-like streams.

Nose: sour acidic pukey funk, strong apricot and lemony wheat malt overtones. (lvl-9)-pungency

Attack: big crisp tart bite, puckery-sour-tangy

Mid-palate: fizzy, (lvl-2-sweetness), lemony wheat malt,

Finish: dry grainy wheat, mild palate rough, apricot exhale

Summary: Good flavour and complexity for a sub 5% beer. The body peters out in the late mids.

Visual: Pours dark brown without much of a head, ringed retention with an island, a few slow singular streams.

Nose: sweet caramel barley malt (lvl-3)-pungency

Attack: crisp, tingly, overly sweet malt impression

Mid-palate: artificial biscuity, plain barley malt, cloying (lvl-9-sweetness),

Finish: nutmeg, residual excess sweetness

Summary: Way too cloying sweet with a non-appealing artificial brownie flavour that ruins the overall experience. Not in the least like salted caramel and certainly nothing like a brownie. Not recommended. The worst I’ve had from New Belgium to date.

Visual: Hefty bottle, bottled on 2016.01.20. Pours blush pink with a massive foamy head, super clustered hyper active champagne streams. Visually stunning.

Nose: funky sour acidity, pukey red wine fruity. (lvl-7)-pungency

Attack: fizzy, immediate sour-big tartness crisp

Mid-palate: puckery hit, tart gums, raspberry malt, (lvl-3-sweetness), pukey overtone acidity

Finish: residual tanginess, slight lemony exhale

Summary: Its extremely appetite inducing sour-tartness means that a sip this begs to be paired with some food. Full textured, light medium-bodied, decent flavour but not terribly aromatic in the raspberry department. Huge puckery pukey sourness if you’re into it, one try is good enough for me.

Nose: tart fruity funked lychee (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: crisp-creamy

Mid-palate: (lvl-3-sweetness), fruity aromatic lychee, mild wheat malt, soft tart

Finish: lingering fruitiness, cinnamon exhale

Summary: Great stuff, solid lychee flavour with a very nice fruity malt body. The cinnamon and oak are subtle but present.

Visual: Pours clear golden yellow with a med-large super foamy lasting head, very stick lacing, clusters of steady streams.

Nose: peach-apricot-apple fruity. (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: crisp-fruity, foamy feel

Mid-palate: off-dry (lvl-2)-sweetness, light tangy, (MAIN) red apple, banana wheat malt, subtle bitterness

Finish: light spicy, mild lemony dry finish.

Summary: Very fruity, low bitterness, easy-drinking. Can’t really distinguish advertised bittering agents, mostly wheat malt comes through.
