  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: yes
  • Would I recommend this to fruit wine aficionados: yes!
  • What was most impressionable: big depth of berry flavour

Visual: (cellared for at least 5 years). Pours clear dark plum, a few bubbles in the glass.

Nose: fruity tart grape-raspberry, alcoholic backdrop. (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: fruity sweet impression

Mid-palate: controlled (lvl-6-sweetness), cherry-cranberry-pomegranate blend, light tart, tangy short acidity

Finish: residual fruity sugars, mild alcohol warmth

Summary: Super red fruity while having a solid depth, controlled sugars and acidity, and a pleasant and clean finish. Supremely sippable. This would do wonders in a cocktail. I would buy another bottle if I ever see it again.

Domaine de Terrebrune Bonnezeaux 2006 (Late Harvest) (France)

Domaine de Terrebrune Bonnezeaux 2006, 13% ABV, 500 ml., (Notre-Dame-d’Allençon, France)


from the Domaine de Terrebrune website:

“Famous desert wine, the colour is gilded with green reflections. The nose is fine and subtle, in mouth it expresses the acacia, fern, and citrus fruits. In age the flavours change : honey, lime and stone taste with rifle. Serve it in medium temperature : 12 °C, taste it in apéritif, with a foie gras, white meats, strong cheeses, blue cheeses. A young Bonnezeaux can be serve with shellfish (lobster). The Bonnezeaux is a high-class wine of guard, sometime centenary but ten years is good enough. This wine represents the Chenin from the Loire, an outstanding wine, something very rare.”

-actually, I prefer it at room temperature, around 21°C, so that it becomes slightly more viscous and you get more deep warmth.

  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: not worth the $$$

Visual: (2006 Vintage, cellared for 10 years). Pours clear light golden orange.

Nose: tangy citrusy sweet apple-pear. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: chilled=thin viscosity, warm=slightly thick, incoming sugars

Mid-palate: sweet-sour acidic tang, dense (lvl-7-sweetness) sugar hit, medium body, apple, lime, honey, alcohol zingy

Finish: nectarine exhale, woody throat warmth, short flavour finish

Summary: Not particularly memorable since I had a fantastic Donnafugata Ben Ryé Passito yesterday [A-]. Somewhat lacking in full bodyness and length, the flavours are simplistically good but over too quickly.

  • Taste: rich blackberry tangy alcoholic light warmth

  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: 50/50

Visual: Deep luscious dark purple. Shrink foil wrapped, real cork.

Nose: blackberry juice, vodka vapours (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: incoming tangy sugars + alcohol, thicker mouthfeel

Mid-palate: alcohol detection, rich sour-tangy acidity, fruity (lvl-7)-sweetness, (MAIN) blackberry, red grape

Finish: residual warmth, black fruit exhale

Summary: Very clean from start to finish with a good fortified alcoholic backbone. I enjoyed this one much more than their fortified blueberry offering.

Pentâge Icewine – Pentage Winery (Penticton, BC, Canada)

  • it takes roughly 3kg of grapes to make one 375ml bottle of icewine, depending on the grape. (google search)

“…Bright gold in color, with intense aromas of candied apricot and honey on the nose. The palate delivers a luscious melody of candied fruits with a smidgen of honey and fig. Barrel fermented giving this wine a rich creamy mouth feel.  Perfectly balanced with vibrant acidity, this wine gets better with every sip as it lingers endlessly on your palate.”

  • Taste: Clean dense-sugared apricot sour green apple

  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: what for?

Visual: Thin skinny 200ml bottle, real cork w/ waxed top, simple and classy label. Pours deep striking golden yellow.

Nose: pineapple, passion fruit, hints of lychee. Very fruit forward. (lvl-7)-pungency

Attack: incoming syrupy dense sugars, (lvl-8)-sweetness

Mid-palate: clean transition from sugars, light alcohol detection, (MAIN) white raisin, apricot, sour green apple

Finish: very light throat warmth, white grape fruity exhale.

Summary: Lots of brightness in this one, very approachable. The sugars become slightly cloying in the midpalate as it warms. A very nice offering and certainly levels above the Isabella icewines I’ve been having.

  • Taste: unelegant sugary strawberry/grape alcoholic
  • Where I got it : @Winery in Richmond
  • How much: $60 – 375ml., January 2013
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: what for?

Visual: Cork broke in half upon opening, solidified sugars at the mouth of the bottle. Pours reddish-orange-purple.

Nose: sweet red grape juice, faint alcohol detection,  (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: very dense sugars, tangy, medium sour-acidity

Mid-palate: (lvl-9)-sweetness, bitter alcohol, lingering acidity, (MAIN) strawberry, concentrated red grape juice

Finish: cloying sugars, mild heat, sickly sweet finish.

Summary: Like the majority of their previous offerings, this one isn’t at all good either. No sensational textures or flavours, just sugary strawberry-grape with a whole lot of roughness throughout. Avoid. If this is their special reserve how bad is their regular batch?

  • Taste: Light fruitiness of blueberry mostly alcohol & warmth

Visual: Standard thin and tall dessert wine bottle, shrink foil wrapped, synthetic cork, a nice quality label. Pours deep and dark luscious purple.

Nose: grape-blueberry with some muskiness (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: incoming sour acidity, alcohol, thin fruity

Mid-palate: (lvl-6)-sweetness, (MAIN) cassis, blueberry, red grape

Finish: light oak, alcoholic dryness, deep throat warmth, minor alcohol tongue numbness, light berry fruit finish.

Summary: Overall just decent. Not particularly lush or aromatic, the flavours just glide along with alcohol and warmth being the main players.

Late Harvest Merlot – Isabella Winery (Richmond, BC, Canada)

  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: refund immediately

Visual: Pours clear orange-red with a small bubbles, surprisingly.

Nose: fruity sweet red grape/strawberry/raspberry. (lvl-8)-pungency

Attack: acidic, hints of effervescence, incoming alcoholic sweetness

Mid-palate: (lvl-8)-sweetness, bitter alcohol, medium sour-light tart, (MAIN) sour red grape, light raspberry,

Finish: rough lingering acidity, light heat, tangy alcohol bittersweet finish.

Summary: This drinks very jagged in terms of textures and taste. It’s like a mix of vodka and grape soda, or vodka and cider, not clean at all.
