Blueberry Oatmeal Stout – Buffalo Bill’s Brewery, 7.5% ABV, (Seattle, Portland, Berkeley)

On the front label:

“oatmeal stout brewed with blueberries with natural flavors added”

My Notes:

  • My Rating: B-
  • Why I like it: blueberry flavour and deep stout are both there
  • Where I got it: Libations Liquor (W. King Ed)
  • How much: $17 (after 10%)  for 6pack, Dec/2011
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: No
  • Would I recommend this to beer afficianados: Yes, unique brew

Tasting notes: Pours dark brown/purple with a small dissipating head, micro CO2, barely any lacing, ringed retention, barely visible slowly moving CO2 streams. Light real blueberry aromas on the nose. Blueberry flavour is there right up front, mixed with med-thick malts, light roast, mild purple grape, chocolate, 6/10-level sweetness in the mids, creamy mouthfeel, sake-like floralness and a light 4/10-level bitterness at the end. Medium complexity, medium-depth, quite good transitions, good carry, decent length, great drinkability (must be in a chilled glass!). Blueberry flavour is present but you have to look for it. Smooth for 7.5% ABV.

America’s Original Pumpkin Ale – Buffalo Bill’s Brewery (USA)

America’s Original Pumpkin Ale – Buffalo Bill’s Brewery, 5.2% ABV, (Seattle/Portland/Berkeley, USA)

On the label;

“Ale brewed with real pumpkin and natural spice flavor”

My Notes:

  • My Rating: C+
  • Why I like it: spices in beer, my fav
  • Where I got it: Legacy Liquor Store
  • How much: $17 (after 10%)  for 6pack, Oct 2011
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: Nope
  • Would I recommend this to beer afficianados: Yes

Tasting notes: Pours cloudy malted orange with small head, small floating retention, torrents of fast-moving CO2 streams, glass-clinging/sliding lacing, micro CO2. Pumpkin and cinnamon/nutmeg + malt on the nose. Burst of nutmeg/cinnamon up front, sharp and heavily carbonated, light-medium mouthfeel, some malts and pumpkin, carbonated finish. Not quite balanced – overly carbonated, good flavour, but not much carry in the watery finish. Medium complexity, medium depth, short-medium length, not-good-enough carry, medium-bodied. Spices and flavour are good, but burpy carbonation and watery finish no good.

Orange Blossom – Buffalo Bill’s Brewery, 5.2% ABV, (brewed by Pyramid Brewing, Seattle, Berkeley, Portland)

On the front label:

“Ale brewed with honey; orange peel, natural flavor and orange flower extract added.”

  • My Rating: B-
  • Why I might like it: unique orange blossom flavour
  • Who I recommend it to: bitter beer haters
  • Where I got it: W.16th
  • How much: <$15 for 6pack , 2010

Tasting Notes (updated March/2012): pours golden amber, small head, some lacing, good CO2 streams. Strong honey nose, some metallic elements. Sweet orange blossom water up front, candied orange, marmalade, clean mildly sour non-bitter finish. Aggressive 7/10-level sourness is invasive and slightly off-balance at the start.
