Visual: (cellared for at least 3 years). Synthetic cork, really stuck in there. Pours

Nose: deep luscious tangy blackberry wine, soft alcoholic background (lvl-7)-pungency

Attack: tart berriness, almost immediate alcohol

Mid-palate: more alcohol presence, luscious tangy blackberry wine, slight smokiness, eau-de-vie

Finish: very tart, blackberry wine exhale, moderate throat warmth

Summary: A lot of depth to the blackberry, but with it comes a rather forward alcohol presence. The blackberry flavour itself has the dark berriness but lacks the bright, tangy juiciness you find in the fresh fruit; thus after a glass the taste becomes predictable and overly tart. Too much alcohol, not enough complexity.

  • Would I recommend this to fruit wine aficionados: not at all

Visual: (cellared for 4 years). Resealable plastic cork, twisty steel top cap, foil cover. Pours medium apple juice yellow with lots of fizzy activity, clusters of steady streams (< champagne), large bubbles hugging the glass.

Nose: buttery sweet baked bread, “DIY ehrenfelser” I did way ages ago (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: tingly-fizzy, soft-sour crisp acidity

Mid-palate: butter, (lvl-1-sweetness), generic dull white wine, curd, continued medium short sourness

Finish: hints of sprite, almost salty-savoury nut finish.

Summary: Definitely a starter to a meal wine, with a drier mouthfeel and sourish disposition to help open up the palate. It went pretty well with my mushroom burger, but pretty meh on its own. The effervescence disappears after a couple of hours even after re-corking.

  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: yep!

Visual: Real cork. Pours blood red, ultra clear and thicker viscosity.

Nose: bursting tangy raspberry juice with some currant and alcohol in the backend – awesome. (lvl-10)-pungency

Attack: tingly-tangy, dense fruity raspberry

Mid-palate: (lvl-7-sweetness), big tangy-zingy-sour alcohol, tangy raspberry juice,

Finish: fruity tart, red/black currant/raspberry depth, soft alcoholic throat warmth, lingering tangy acidity.

Summary: Consistent with their Blackberry [B] and Cranberry [B-] fortified wines, this raspberry is also full of authentic berry depth and a structured alcoholic body. It gets somewhat more aggressive at is warms, but is still very engaging.

Visual: (cellared for 6 years). Quality frosted hefty bottle & sturdy cap. Pours clear bright apple juice yellow with lots of soda-like activity, big bubbles hugging the glass, champagne-like streams.

Nose: very faint nectarine candy. (lvl-2)-pungency

Attack: fizzy-crisp, fruity

Mid-palate: tingly, dry (lvl-1-sweetness), light green apple, light apple wine, tangy-sour-acidity

Finish: soft tart, light nectarine exhale

Summary: Lots of fizzy activity in this one along with a dry-tangy acidic backbone to keep things going. Not a ton of apple nor nectarine flavour, thus not leaving much of an impact. Goes down easy and hits pretty stealth, but ultimately forgettable.

  • Would I recommend this to dessert wine aficionados: worth a try if they still sell it

Visual: (cellared for 2 years). Real cork. Pours dark ruby red with a hint of purple, clear and thicker viscosity.

Nose: fragrant luscious tangy strawberry juice – Immaculate. (lvl-10)-pungency

Attack: background off-dry alcohol

Mid-palate: (lvl-5-sweetness), mild strawberry jam, eau-de-vie alcohol, prickly tangy acidity

Finish: throat heat alcohol attack, strawberry exhale

Summary: An incredibly inviting real strawberry nose starts it off nicely. Its sweetness is rather tame of a dessert wine; I suspect this has been fortified because I detect a prominent eau-de-vie presence in the mids that carries through to the finish. About 60/40-alcohol/fruitiness ratio. Not your typical syrupy sweet dessert fruit wine, quite sippable.

13 Moons Oraniensteiner Icewine 2006 – Sonoran Estate Winery (Summerland, BC, Canada)

13 Moons Oraniensteiner Icewine 2006 – Sonoran Estate Winery, 11.5% ABV, 200 ml., (Summerland, BC, Canada) (*local BC wine*)

“Named after a castle in Germany, the Oraniensteiner varietal is the little-known love-child of Riesling and Sylvaner: parents of more familiar breeds such as Ehrenfelser and Kerner. Developed during the 1960’s at the famous Geisenheim Grapebreeding Institute in Germany, Oraniensteiner is celebrated by wine lovers for its vivid citrus flavours and bracing acidity: a perfect profile to balance the inherent sweetness of dessert wines. Extremely rare in Canada, the most significant plantings are at the meticulous 20+ year old Naramata vineyards belonging to Dan and Wolfgang Zellers, without whom Oraniensteiner may have become an obscure footnote in viticulture history.

Visual: (cellared for 10 years). Composite cork, still intact. Pours deep dark amber, crystal clear, thicker viscosity.

Nose: tangy syrupy grape-plum, hints of toffee. (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: thicker, juicy sweet

Mid-palate: controlled (lvl-8-sweetness), rich tangy red grape juice, plum wine, crisp acidity, rounded flavour

Finish: gentle throat warmth, residual tangy fruity sugars

Summary: I visited the winery back in 2009 and was impressed by the ‘honey-like’ and drinkable their Icewines were. Fast forward 7 years and 1000+ tastings experience, I’d say this Icewine is still decent but not terribly complex as a dessert wine.

Visual: (cellared for 5 years). Bottle cap top. Pours clear medium golden yellow with quickly dissipating small bubbles, a couple singular slow streams.

Nose: apple, mild peachy, a touch of minerals. (lvl-2)-pungency

Attack: crisp off-dry sour bite, slight fizzy

Mid-palate: (lvl-2-sweetness), fruity apple, hints of peach, medium tangy firm acidity,

Finish: residual tart sticky gums,

Summary: This off-dry wine does a good job of opening up the palate – a nice aperitif, as advertised. Solid apple-white grape flavour, certainly better than their rosé rendition [C]. Not quite a Champagne, but decent.
