Sovereign Super Saison – Four Winds Brewing Co., 8.5% ABV – 20 IBU, 750 ml, (Delta, BC, Canada) (*local BC craft beer*)

on the back label:

“Appearance is pale with hues of straw and aroams are sweet of candied orange and red apple. Through mixed fermentation and assertive dry-hopping comes a unique and complex balance of tart fruity esters, elderflower and spice, tapering to a dry finish.”

Ingredients: Pilsner & Wheat Malt, Flaked Wheat, Flaked Oat, Carapils Belma, Elderflower, Belgian Yeast, Brettanomyces, Lactobacillus. April 29, 2016

  • Style: (Imperial) Saison
  • Taste: Full tangy tangerine sweet malt grapefruit/melon hop exhale
  • Where I got it : Bottle Jockey / N. Bby
  • How much: $13.80 CAD (after 12.5% off) – 750 ml., May 2016
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
  • Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: good mouthfeel, strange taste

Visual: Corked with a twisty steel cap. Pours cloudy orange-brown with suspended sediment, a huge foamy head, lasting retention, clusters of active micro streams.

Nose: apple-elderflower citrusy hopped malt (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: crisp-big full foamy

Mid-palate: dull dried grassy elderflower, (lvl-5-sweetness), almost salty, tangy-sour, light toasty barley malt, apple

Finish: astringent lingering elderflower, banana wheat malt exhale, alcoholic zingy

Summary: Good mouthfeel and body, but I’m not quite liking the elderflower in this – it tastes of the dried variety but on steroids – way too grassy and not enough brightness.
