(May 2013 tasting):

Tasting notes: pours almost clear filtered apple juice yellow with minimal head, and lots of CO2 activity. Very fruity green apple juicy nose with a bit of yeasty banana wheat.

Attack: soft wheat malt, 6/10-candy sweetness

Mid-palate: fizzy, sour tart green apple, mild apple peel fibrous, yeasty, cuts dry

Finish: light rough dry, light soapy green apple, tingly finish.

A dry finish that is excessively dry and wheat/malty for my tastes.

May 2016 tasting:

Visual: Pours translucent yellow-orange with a large foamy head, 2mm layer of fine retention, clusters of fast and active streams.

Nose: apple soda, kinda soaplike but pleasant, background banana wheat malt. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: crisp, cream-bubbly mouthfeel

Mid-palate: tangy green apple, fake syrupy-like (lvl-4-sweetness)

Finish: light-sour yeasty, dry wheat malt palate roughness, muscat grape exhale

Summary: I liked the crisp tanginess of it, and the green apple/muscat was nice but once again another Unibroue brew that doesn’t finish clean.

Visual: Pours clear deep raspberry juice red with no head, thin ringed retention, lively clusters of small CO2 streams.

Nose: filtered tart and sweet raspberry juice, background peaty. (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: hugely tart-acidic crisp

Mid-palate: tangy sour raspberry juice, yeasty fizzy-tingly, (lvl-2-sweetness), peaty undertones, subtle background apple

Finish: saliva-inducing residual acidity, raspberry exhale

Summary: Big bold authentic raspberry taste, somewhat too basic but I was surprised by the noticeable smoky/peaty element in the background. Candyesque flavour after awhile.

Visual: Pours translucent pale orange with a large dissipating head, 1 mm layer of micro retention and wet sticky lacing, spread out clustered streams.

Nose: unfiltered apple juice, banana wheat malt with a bit of yeastiness. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: crisp, mouthful of sharp tingly-fizzy CO2

Mid-palate: red apple juice, (lvl-8-sweetness), banana wheat malt, tangy alcoholic hit, background sweet barley malt

Finishclove, subtle hopped bitterness, roughish finish

Summary: Mostly banana wheat malt dominant with aggressive alcoholic sweetness. Somewhat palate non-compliant in the mids. Overall it is unelegant.

Pucker Meister has a low bitterness and almost no hop aroma. Pale malt, wheat malt and sterling hops are all essential in the brewing process but the high acidity and distinctly sour taste are from the fermentation with ale yeast and the bacteria Lactobacillus delbrueckii. Pucker Meister has bready malt flavours and is pale yellow in colour. It’s a great thirst-quenching beer that goes perfectly with the record-breaking hot weather this summer. Berliner Weisse can be enjoyed on its own but is best served mit schuss (with syrup). Raspberry and woodruff syrups tend to be the most popular but why not try any quality fruit syrup. Pair it with a fruit forward sweet dessert to balance the sourness. Pucker Meister Berliner Weisse is being released now in a limited run of 650 ml bottles that will be available at the GIB Taproom and select liquor stores in Vancouver and area.

Visual: (cellared for 3 years). Pours cloudy pale straw yellow with barely any head, many active streams breaking the surface.

Nose: sour pineapple Calpis. (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: tart lacto-sour, tingly-fizzy

Mid-palate: puckery sour, lemon curd, pineapple, (lvl-3-sweetness), Calpis

Finish: tart sour, sticky gums, palate rough finish.

Summary: Very sour and tart, not so much in a good way. Drinkable but rough as a sipper. I tried it with Giffard framboise syrup, marginally better but now it’s just plasticky. Meh.

When ya think about it, calling any PILS an IMPERIAL PILS is somewhat ironic. At the time of its creation in the dim recesses of post-stone-age / pre-X-box European citystates teh PILSENER style was indeed the IMPERIAL beer of its time, putting every other more colorful beer of its time to shame amidst a revolution of thermometer making. And without a doubt, its reign was long. No American-born ales have usurped all of the imperialness there is to usurp and for the PILS to rise again, like every aspiration-ridden social ladder-climbing creature on the planet it must further evolve … This is that! We ahve made our own not-so-ordinary PILS every week of every year since 1996 and we have come to respect its stature in our own brewery-word … but Darwin never sleeps. Evolution persists, the weak are meat and the strong will eat, and now this brew has happened … further, further, further.”

Visual: Pours pale orange with lots of suspended sediment, a very small long-lasting 3mm micro creamy head, loose clusters of steady medium-sized bubble streams.

Nose: very faint hints of tangerine-kumquat hop oils, barley malt. (lvl-3)-pungency

Attack: cream-thicker-crisp

Mid-palate: zingy alcoholic heaviness, more thick creamy, (lvl-6-sweetness), metallic, tangy-light tangerine-kumquat citrusy hops, sweet barley malt

Finish: light tongue numbness, apple exhale, lingering grassy bitter hops.

Summary: Solid flavours, body and mouthfeel. Not much on the nose but otherwise very enjoyable.

Jacob’s Creek Moscato (Australia)

  • Would I recommend this to white wine aficionados: unbalanced

Visual: (cellared for 5 years). Twist cap top. Pours barely fizzy with lots of small bubbles hugging the side of the glass, light sunshine yellow colour.

Nose: bright apple-lime acidity, stonefruit minerality. (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: puckery acidic-tart

Mid-palate: dense (lvl-6-sweetness), continued med-aggressive sour, alcoholic tang, muscat grape, lime

Finish: tart acidity, thickened saliva, prickly-tangy tongue, sticky gums, apple-white grape exhale.

Summary: Lots of bright grapey-apple fruitiness characteristic of moscatos, although somewhat cloying and sticky in the finish. Drinks like an inexpensive and straightforward muscat wine for the masses.

Angry Boy Brown Ale – Baird Brewing (Numazu, Shizuoka, Japan)

Visual: (cellared for 4 years). Pours muddy nutty brown with smallish dissipating head, thin layer of micro retention mixed with some big bubbles, clustered steady effervescence.

Nose: brown sugar carameled barley malts. (lvl-7)-pungency

Attack: crisp, thicker

Mid-palate: background soft tangy-sour, (lvl-5-sweetness), smooth crisp-cream-slick mouthfeel, rum & dry coke, brown sugar barley malt

Finish: woody toasted-burnt barley malt exhale, stealth subtle very soft lingering hopped bitter.

Summary: Oh so smooth and balanced brown ale with good complexity. Delicious.

Nose: watery apple juice, a touch of apple wine. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: dry, apple fruity-crisp

Mid-palate: clean tangy acidic backbone, hints of lime/minerality, apple cider vinegar, soft dissipating sour, red apple, (lvl-2-sweetness)

Finish: medium tart, red apple juice exhale, sticky

Summary: It being on the dry side, you get to appreciate the subtle nuances of the acidity along with the bright clean apple flavour. All around clean.

Elderflower Kettle Sour – Bridge Brewing Co. (North Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Nose: tangy elderflower, toasty toffee barley malt, alcohol (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: acidic sour-tart

Mid-palate: continued rounded fleshy grapefruit sour, tangy-puckery-tart, elderflower, (lvl-4-sweetness), background barley malt

Finish: toasty, nectarine exhale, lingering hop gentle bitter, grainy barley malt.

Summary: Big yet mostly controlled sourness with a dehydrated elderflower taste. Decent complexity but nothing that makes it epic.

Cluster Single-Hop IPA – Double Mountain Brewery (Hood River, OR, USA)

Visual: Pours translucent muddy amber with a tiny dissipating head, thin half island retention, partial lacing, mixed tight and loose singular streams.

Nose: pineapple, fishy-grassy hops. (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: crisp-almost creamy

Mid-palate: fine micro CO2, pineapple-peach dry bitter hops, (lvl-3-sweetness), fleshy apple, citrusy-tangy barley malt

Finish: lingering medium-sharp hoppy bitter finish.

Summary: A solid, quality texture with smooth transitions and an agreeable flavours. Not overly bitter, it maintains a very nice balance of citrus-sweet malt-bitter hops-crisp creamy mouthfeel.
