Phillips Snowcase 2015 Calendar Day #24
- My Rating: [C+], I gave it a (3.1 of 5) on Ratebeer.com
krampusnacht – Phillips Brewing, 9.5% ABV – 341ml., (Victoria, BC, Canada)
on the front-right label:
“Welcome to the darker side of Christmas. There really is something for everyone. Specially spiced in the spirit of the season with elevated gravity to warm your chilled soul. Walk softly or old Krampus might whoop yer butt.”
Ingredients: water, barley hops, yeast, Belgian candy sugar, grains of paradise, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves
- Style: Spiced Strong Ale
- Taste: Overpowering grains of paradise cinnamon nutmeg sweet malt
- Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
- Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: an okay experimental
Visual: Pours translucent beer bottle brown with a smallish creamy dissipating head, thin layer of retention, singular and coupled clusters of steady streams.
Nose: huge cinnamon & grains of paradise – resembles orange chocolate.(lvl-8)-pungency
Attack: slick-thick, incoming sweet
Mid-palate: (lvl-8)-sweetness, micro fizzy-tingly, (MAIN) cinnamon, grains of paradise, toffee malt,
Finish: residual malt heavy sweetness
Summary: It drinks just like the nose – full of spices, almost overpoweringly so with a heavy sweetness. Too much of the orangy grains of paradise element and not enough caramel/brown sugar malt to dampen the spices. Still tolerable.
