- My Rating: D+
Spiced Ginger Alcoholic Ginger Beer – Crabbie’s, 4% ABV – 500ml., (Glasgow, Great Britain)
On the back label:
“For more than two hundred years CRABBIE’s has shipped its ginger from the Far East – following in the pioneering footsteps of the first Scots Merchant Adventurers – hence our distinctive Elephant Trade Mark.
Following a secret recipe, the steeped ginger is matured for 8 weeks. It’s then combined with real Orange Extract giving a deliciously distinctive flavour.”
- Style: (orange, ginger, spices) Flavoured Ale
- Taste: Soapy orange ginger sweet soda
- Where I got it : BC Liquor Stores
How much: $4 – 500ml., sometime in 2013
- Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
- Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: no
Visual: Pours clear golden orange with minimal head, a bit of lacing, a thin even layer of retention, tight-knit steady CO2 clusters.
Nose: mildly soapy orange with some chai spices, quite refreshing (lvl-7)-pungency
Attack: aspartame-thick mouthfeel
Mid-palate: soda-fizzy mouthfeel, (lvl-5) brighty fruity sweetness, (MAIN) orange slurpee, ginger + mild burn,
Finish: residual ginger burn, burpy, lingering ginger burn + stomach acid burn.
Summary: It doesn’t quite taste like a “beer”, more like an orange-ginger flavoured malt soda that made me run for TUMS halfway through the tasting. They suggest you serve with a slice of orange, which does round out the body and smooth it out a bit.
