- My Rating: C
Black Betty Blackberry Saison – Vancouver Island Brewery, 6.3% ABV – 650ml., (BC, Canada)
on the front-right side label:
“When Black Betty (bam-a-lam), Hand picked island blackberries (bam-a-lam), Spicy Saison yeast (bam-a-lam)…Fresh local blackberries and fresh local beer go together like Hot Rods and Rock & Roll. We brewed this Blackberry Saison and the damn thing went wild. Dry, crisp, and complex, this beer will make you sing!”
- Style: (Blackberry) Flavoured Saison
- Taste: Crisp thin wheat light blackberry burpy
- Where I got it : Brewery Creek
How much: $6 (after 10% off) – 650ml., September 2013
- Do I love this enough to drink it again: no
- Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: no
Visual: Pours golden with a slightly reddish hue, a nice sizable lasting head, some lacing, a decent layer of foamy retention, tight clusters of fast activity.
Nose: Sour fruity blackberries/fieldberries with minor sour acidic funk (lvl-5)-pungency
Attack: sharp crisp, cream-fizzy
Mid-palate: (lvl-3)-sweetness, (MAIN) wheat malts, lager sweetness, minor blackberry
Finish: coriander dry, yeasty, CO2 bloatedness, fruity metallic thin-bodied half-rough finish.
Summary: Not bad; it doesn’t scream saison nor blackberry, just somewhere in the middle. It lacks carry, body, and the finish ain’t so smooth.
