Dessert Wines – Salt Spring Vineyards (Canada)

Salt Spring Vineyards – Salt Spring Island, BC

1) Blackberry port, 16% ABV

from the website www.saltspringvineyards.com:

2010 Blackberry “Port” Organic wild island blackberries.Essence of blackberries. Delicious with chocolate! $23.90”

My Notes:

  • My Rating: B-
  • Why I really like it: blackberry depth/richness
  • Where I got it: Woody’s (?) or that place across from Safeway in Vancouver, West
  • How much: $22 for a 375ml, 2009-2010
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: only as a mixer
  • Would I recommend this to wine afficionados: No

Tasting Notes: pours dark reddish cassis black, has slow moving legs, thicker than wine viscosity. Loads of fragrant fruity blackberries on the nose, mixed with some ethyl alcohol burn, and a bit of raspberries. Deep blackberry flavour up front, sharp sourness, 5/10 sweetness (good), rough tannic leftovers on the tongue, deep slightly “smoky” rounded finish. Medium depth, low-medium complexity (blackberry/raspberry/sweetness/slightly jammy), low-medium length, low carry. Solid, but didn’t blow my mind. Not liking the dry roughness in the mouth and tongue, but good flavour.

2) Apple Pie, 16% ABV

from the website www.saltspringvineyards.com:

“2010 Apple Pie Dessert style wine but not overly sweet and cloying. Organic apples. Store and serve cool but not cold to maximize flavor.Blue and cheddar cheese. Great with roast pork too! $23.90”

My Notes:

  • My Rating: A
  • Why I really like it: spiced, clean, and refreshing
  • Where I got it: Woody’s (?) or that place across from Safeway in Vancouver, West
  • How much: $22 for a 375ml, 2009-2010
  • Do I love this enough to drink it again: Yes, shared
  • Would I recommend this to wine afficionados: Yes

Tasting Notes (chilled): pours slightly cloudy yellow, like a partially filtered fuji apple juice. Very lightly carbonated (bonus!), fast disappearing CO2. Visible bits of cinnamon & nutmeg. Apple juice on the nose. Slightly thicker than water viscosity, tastes partially like cider, cinnamon/nutmeg intermixed with a very mild alcohol presence. Very smooth for 16%, mild tangy and tart finish, 4/10 sweetness. Hints of white grape & pear at the finish. Very very drinkable, and would be suitable as a mixer.
